Do you know whose city this is?
Welcome to Dhaka
Twenty million people, and every one of them going somewhere. Take a rickshaw down a gali in Old Dhaka, a CNG up Airport Road, a double-decker through the Farmgate jam. Step out. Walk. Pick a fight, or run from one. The street sees you, talks back, and remembers.
The city
Built on the real map of the capital, from the avenues of Uttara to the launch ghats on the Buriganga. Every road, every lane, every roundabout where you'd expect it, and the metro running over it all.

Twenty-one, from a lane in Kazipara, third year of economics at Dhaka University. Days are classes and cha at TSC; from six to midnight he rides orders across Banani and Gulshan to pay for his mother's dialysis. When that isn't enough, he takes the off-app jobs: parcels he's paid never to open.

Fifteen years a detective and twice decorated, until he refused to sign a report he knew was a lie. Now a letter of safe conduct and the promise of his rank back send him in alone, after Sultan Bhai. The street knows him as Tanvir Sawdagar, a Dubai returnee in a navy suit.
The street has a boss
The godfather of the stands. A "businessman" with a garage in Old Dhaka, a black SUV and friends in high places, he takes a cut of every rickshaw, CNG and leguna stand from Sadarghat to Farmgate. He rarely raises his voice, and never his hands, while his men are there to do it.
His men
Sultan Bhai's gun, named for the gold chain he never takes off. He draws, aims and warns before he fires.
Pulled a rickshaw for years before Sultan put him on the line. Now he collects from the men he used to drink cha with.
A butcher's son from Kaptan Bazar. Speaks little, stands too close and hits like a cleaver.
Nineteen, a pompadour and a scar. His boys on motorbikes film every fight for the channel.
Works the lanes round Karwan Bazar after dark with a long knife. Shows it before he uses it.
The law
A constable saw that.
Patrol cars, sirens, the whole thana.
Roadblocks ahead. They shoot back.
RAB joins the hunt.
Every gun in Dhaka is looking for you.
Get caught and it's a bribe on the spot or a night in the thana. And at the cantonment gates the army fires its warning shots into the air. Don't make them aim lower.
Rides
The city's own. Narrow enough for any gali, slow enough to see everything.

Green, caged and unstoppable. Fits through gaps that don't exist.
3 passengers
The people's minibus: two benches of passengers and a helper hanging off the back.
12 passengers
Quick, light and always late. The fastest way across a city that never moves.
1 rider
Two storeys of red steel. Nothing in the city argues with it.
60 passengers
Motorbikes off the kerb, cars at the lights, a police pickup if you're brave. Or leave the wheel to someone else: the metro runs all day over the city.
Arsenal
Fists first. Then whatever is to hand. Everything else is cash only, from a shuttered shop in Bangshal. Ask for Kamal.
Time
The morning rush, the afternoon heat, the golden hour and the city lit up at night. Then the rain comes in off the river.
Places
Four centuries of lanes, painted signboards and rickshaw bells.
Triple-decker launches on the Buriganga at dusk.
Home. Markets, kiosks, the stadium and the thana.
The metro overhead and the busiest crossings in the country below.
Glass towers, embassies, and a checkpoint on every corner.
TSC, the Shaheed Minar and the doel on its roundabout.
Widebodies at the gates, jets low over the highway, day and night.
